In the last few weeks, several of the big teams in the FIFA World Cup have started to unveil the rosters that they intend to bring to North America for the upcoming weeks of action. Spain was one of these countries, and their national team unveiling was met with some controversy as the roster contained no players from Real Madrid, one of the nation's biggest teams.
It was the first time in the history of the Spanish national team that Los Blancos hadn’t had any representation, with the players omitted being the likes of Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras, Raul Asencio, and Dani Ceballos, amongst others.
Their omission comes after what was a disappointing season for Real Madrid, as they finished runners-up to their rivals Barcelona in La Liga, lost out in the round of 16 in the Copa del Rey to Segunda División side Albacete, as well as losing the Super Copa to the aforementioned Catalonia-based side.
But perhaps the one that might have hurt the most for the Madridistas would be their performance in the Champions League, a competition that the team practically rules over, having won it a total of 15 times, with two of those triumphs coming in the 2020s alone. This season would only see Real Madrid make it to the quarter-finals, in which they’d lose to Bayern Munich, 6-4 on aggregate.
But their struggles were seen in the league stage of the competition, where Los Blancos finished in ninth place, meaning they had to go through the playoff rounds to extend their runs.
All things considered, Real Madrid had several players who still produced solid numbers in the European competition, with Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior netting a combined 20 goal involvements, while Federico Valverde had several solid performances, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Round of 16.

— UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) May 31, 2026However, just like their representation in the Spanish national team, Real Madrid failed to have any players be named to UEFA’s Team of the Season for the 2025-26 Champions League, with Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, and the aforementioned Bayern Munich all having players fill out the lineup.
This marks the second straight year that the Spanish giants haven’t had any names in the end-of-season honors.
