If the Golden State Warriors are seriously on the hunt for a superstar contributor this offseason, there are only three options that make sense: Kawhi Leonard, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and LeBron James.
Leonard and Antetokounmpo would be trade targets for the Dubs, while James would be a free agent option. On Monday, the Warriors received a valuable $15 million free update regarding James.
"If they maneuver their roster and payroll just enough, the Warriors could offer LeBron the $15.1 million nontaxpayer midlevel exception," The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami reported.
"And, very importantly, the Warriors would not have to trade anything or unload any major salaries to do it. This would be a direct add."
"Again, I don’t think LeBron ending up with the Warriors is the likeliest scenario," he notes. "I think it’s set up for him to return to the Lakers; they’re the one likely option that could pay him a lot more than $15.1 million. Also, LeBron could retire."
If all else fails with the Warriors this summer, they should find a way to add James to the equation. Yes, the four-time NBA champion is old, and he’s no longer a plus defender who regularly instills fear into his opponents. Still, he’d instantly become one of the Warriors’ most prolific scoring and playmaking options.
At this stage of Stephen Curry’s career, the Davidson product wants Golden State to make a more valiant effort to surround him with high-profile talent in his late 30s. Uniting him with James would be a step in the right direction, but Golden State will have to outbid several other franchises for a deal to materialize.
