On Friday, Rudy Gobert and the Minnesota Timberwolves had an intense road game against the Phoenix Suns in Emirates NBA Cup action. Towards the end of the game, Gobert got involved in an altercation, drawing the ire of a Suns announcer.
With the Wolves up 111-105 at the 1:09 mark of the fourth quarter, Suns guard Ryan Dunn fouled Timberwolves player Donte DiVincenzo, who dished the ball to Gobert in the paint just as the illegal contact was made. Though the whistle had been blown, Gobert went for a dunk attempt but 6-foot-1 guard Collin Gillespie went for a block and hit him on the back of the head. Gobert then went to confront Gillespie for this collision.

Displeased with what he saw from Gobert, Suns color commentator Eddie Johnson called out the Wolves center on live TV.

"Gobert is getting ready to go after the smallest guy on the floor," Johnson commented. "I say, what happened when you could've gone after Draymond?"Johnson is referring to an infamous incident involving Gobert and Draymond Green back in the 2023-24 season. During a Wolves matchup with the Golden State Warriors, which also happened to be an NBA Cup game, Gobert went to break up a scuffle between Jaden McDaniels and Klay Thompson. Green entered the picture and proceeded to lock Gobert in a headlock.
As Green was dragged away by officials, Gobert regained his bearings on the floor. Johnson, then, was essentially calling for Gobert to pick on someone his own size as he confronted the much smaller Gillespie.
After the brief exchange between Gobert and Gillespie, the Suns would go on a 9-2 run to close the game. Gillespie himself made the go-ahead basket with 6.4 seconds left to help Phoenix pull off the 114-113 victory.

In the clip, which comes from the Wolves' home game against the Washington Wizards, Gobert airballs a free throw, drawing audible groans from the crowd inside Target Center.
Gobert finished 1-2 for the free throw line that night, when he chipped in nine points, 15 rebounds, and three assists to help the Wolves defeat the Wizards 120-109.
