South Carolina fell one win short of a national championship last season, and the Gamecocks have retooled as they begin their quest for another title Monday against Grand Canyon.
While Dawn Staley has plenty of talent on hand in Columbia, the absences may be most noticeable early on. Te-Hina Paopao, Bree Hall and Sania Feagin have moved on to the WNBA. Chloe Kitts will miss the season after tearing her ACL, while Ashlyn Watkins is taking a year away from school after an ACL tear of her own. Most intriguingly, dynamic guard MiLaysia Fulwiley transferred to arch-rival LSU.
None of those players led the Gamecocks in scoring last season, though. That honor went to Joyce Edwards (12.7 ppg), who led a balanced attack as a freshman despite starting only one game. Veteran guards Raven Johnson and Tessa Johnson also return, with some new faces around them.
Senior Ta'Niya Latson figures to make the biggest impact after averaging 25.2 points per game last season at Florida State, her third consecutive campaign scoring at least 21 per game. Mississippi State transfer Madina Okot brings desperately needed size at 6-foot-6 and averaged 11.3 points and 9.6 rebounds last year. And look out for freshmen Agot Makeer and Ayla McDowell, versatile wings who both have international experience.
