The Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers might have one less competitor for the services of former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.
The Raiders and Chargers are interested in McDaniel. Las Vegas has interviewed him for their head-coaching vacancy, while the expectation is McDaniel will take the offensive coordinator job in Los Angeles if he strikes out on head coach jobs.
McDaniel was supposed to interview for the Buffalo Bills' head coach vacancy, but The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that interview has been cancelled by McDaniel.
"Update: Mike McDaniel pulled out of his scheduled meeting down in Florida with the Bills yesterday, I’m told, and the two sides never met," she reported. "McDaniel remains in contention for the Raiders’ head coaching job, but if he takes an OC position, it’s still expected to be with the Chargers."
Fellow NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that "both sides remain in contact for a potential interview."
Assuming that interview never happens, this is great news for the Chargers and Raiders, both of whom have one less form of competition for McDaniel.
And the Bills would be very strong competition, as Buffalo sports arguably the most attractive destination for head-coach candidates.
McDaniel met with the Raiders in Miami, where the team's brass was watching its likely future quarterback, Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, in the National Championship Game.
Rumor suggest the Raiders are looking for an offensive-minded coach, and McDaniel obviously fits the bill.
But it's possible the Raiders have their eye on someone else, as one would assume they would have already locked McDaniel up if both sides felt strongly about a working relationship.
We would say the most likely outcome is McDaniel lands with the Chargers.
