Giants sign back recently traded 25-year old infielder

The San Francisco Giants swung a trade for Osleivis Basabe before the 2025 season.

And when his contract was up at the end of the year, the Giants didn't wait long to ensure he wouldn't go anywhere.

According to Baseball America's Matt Eddy, Basabe is coming back on a new contract.

Basabe was sent by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Giants in February.

He played the whole season at Triple-A Sacramento, where he spent time at shortstop, second base and third base.

Basabe batted .249 and hit 14 home runs.

He's a career .266 hitter at the Triple-A level.

He was once a well-regarded prospect with the Rays, but his bat never developed quite as expected.

He actually made it to the majors in 2023, but he hit just .218 in 31 games.

Basabe is still just 25 years old.

He'll try to run it back with the Giants, who have their infield pretty set at the MLB level, along with a couple of depth pieces who likely slot above Basabe, too.

But given the chance to return somewhere he's comfortable, that's what Basabe did. He'll probably open the season back at Sacramento and try to work his way back to the major leagues.
