Former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is under NFL review following a sideline confrontation with a Detroit Lions fan with whom he reportedly has prior history with.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Metcalf said he reported the same fan — who has since identified himself as Ryan Kennedy in an interview with the Detroit Free Press — to Seahawks security last season while he was still in Seattle.
Now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Metcalf was shown on the CBS broadcast late in the second quarter of Pittsburgh’s 29–24 win at Ford Field approaching a front-row fan, grabbing at his shirt and appearing to grab the fan’s wig and lunging toward him with limited contact.
DK Metcalf says fan used racially charged language
Metcalf alleges the fan made a racial remark toward him during the Dec. 21 game. Kennedy, who is from Pinckney, Michigan, told the Detroit Free Press that he sparked the exchange by calling Metcalf by his full legal name, DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf.
However, Pelissero reported that a source close to Metcalf disputed that account, saying the fan made a derogatory comment about Metcalf’s mother and directed racially charged language at him. Kennedy allegedly used “something we both know you don’t call a Black man,” according to Metcalf’s account.
Officials did not penalize Metcalf during the game, as they did not witness the incident, and the fan was not removed from the stadium. Metcalf remained in the game and finished with four receptions for 42 yards.
The NFL is now expected to review the altercation for potential discipline, with a decision anticipated on Dec. 22, per Pelissero. The review will determine whether the matter results in a fine, a warning, or more serious action.
Pelissero also noted that Metcalf previously flagged the same fan during Seattle’s visit to Detroit on Sept. 30, 2024, though no penalties or fines were issued from that game, suggesting the situation did not escalate at the time.
