Chiefs' ex-Pro Bowl QB hints at interest in a comeback after Mahomes, Minshew injuries

1 hour ago 2

The Kansas City Chiefs are pretty much out of quarterbacks.

Patrick Mahomes is out with a torn ACL. Gardner Minshew is out with a knee injury, too.

They've still got Chris Oladokun, and they just signed Shane Buechele.

But what if they could bring back an old friend?

The Philip Rivers comeback for the Colts has other retired QBs considering comebacks, at least in jest.

It's not clear at all whether this is for real or just playing along, but Matt Cassel says he's available.

The one-time Chiefs Pro Bowl QB posted this on X on Sunday night:

Seeing a lot people mentioning me going to the Chiefs. Arm’s loose. Phone line’s open.

Cassel hasn't played in the NFL since appearing in two games off the bench for the Detroit Lions in 2018.

He has played 107 NFL games overall from 2005-18, starting 81, with a 36-45 record as a starter.

Cassel threw 104 touchdowns compared to 82 interceptions in his NFL career.

In his Pro Bowl season with the Chiefs in 2010, he threw 27 TDs compared to 7 INTs.

Cassel is 43 years old now, a year younger than Rivers.

Never say never.
