Miami football head coach Mario Cristobal shared his reaction to receiving a postgame kiss from former Hurricanes star Michael Irvin after beating Texas A&M. Cristobal’s team grinded out a difficult 10-3 win over the Aggies at College Station on Saturday in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
During Cristobal’s postgame interview, Irving came up behind the coach and planted a kiss on his cheek in celebration of the win.

The Hurricanes’ coach subsequently reacted to the gesture in his postgame conference. He said lightheartedly:
“That was disgusting. I mean, he’s got a lot of energy, man. I couldn’t find enough wipes to clean myself. (Michael Irvin) is awesome. I remember being in high school and coming over to practice at the University of Miami and going, ‘Man, I want to be part of those dawgs.’ Those guys were dawgs. I signed with them, and I’m like, ‘Holy crap, these are good. I’ll never play here.’”Irvin’s playing years at Miami and Cristobal’s playing years almost overlapped. Irvin was a wide receiver for the Hurricanes from 1984 to 1987. Meanwhile, Cristobal joined the Hurricanes in 1989 and would remain a player with them until 1992.
Mario Cristobal on Michael Irvin’s importance to Miami
Over the years, Irvin has grown to become one of the program’s most notable fans, a fact Mario Cristobal acknowledges. He said:
“That guy means so much to the program, to its fan base, to our community. Then to see other guys show up, as well, and all week long to see the pride returning to so many former players, to our administration that’s worked so hard to put this all together, to our fan that traveled. They traveled well. They were felt. But yeah, the smooch. I don’t know about the smooch. But God bless him. Glad he’s here, and glad he’s here supporting us.”The Hurricanes secured their playoff berth after a 10-2 campaign, getting a spot ahead of Notre Dame and Vanderbilt, who each had 10 wins also. The win against Texas A&M saw the team advance to the quarterfinal, where it will face Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
With their show on Saturday, Mario Cristobal’s men surely have the defensive edge to keep Ohio State’s offensive firepower. However, the Buckeyes’ offense can enforce greater mobility and force the Hurricanes to give up space.
The Cotton Bowl will be held on New Year’s Eve.
