The ICC Women's World Cup 2025 is officially done and dusted. India made history by winning their first ever Women's World Cup trophy. The Indian team defeated South Africa in an entertaining final played at the DY Patil Stadium on November 2 and became the world champions.
With this win, India have become the first Asian country to win the ICC Women's World Cup in any format. Incidentally, India won the Women's World Cup 2025 in the same city where they won the 2011 Men's ODI World Cup. Even the final match of the 2011 ODI World Cup happened in Mumbai, but at the Wankhede Stadium.
Apart from the aforementioned coincidence, here's a look at the five other stunning similarities between India's Women's World Cup 2025 and Men's World Cup 2011 triumphs.
#1 The final match happened on 2nd date of the month
India won the 2011 Men's World Cup on 2nd April, 2011. Playing under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, the Indian men's team defeated neighbors Sri Lanka to become the first nation to win the Men's World Cup on home soil.
14 years and seven months later, the Indian women's team won the 2025 Women's World Cup on 2nd November, 2025. Harmanpreet Kaur led the Indian team to a win against South Africa in the final match.
#2 Indian team played 1 match outside India against an Asian team in 2011 World Cup and Women's World Cup 2025
The 2011 Men's World Cup was co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The 2025 Women's World Cup happened in India and Sri Lanka. Home team India played a majority of their matches at home in both the mega events.
Incidentally, one of their group stage matches against an Asian team happened outside India. In 2011, India beat Bangladesh in Dhaka and in 2025, India beat Pakistan in Colombo en route to the trophy.
#3 India lost to South Africa and did not win against England in the group stage
In the 2011 Men's World Cup, India lost their group stage match against South Africa in Nagpur. In the 2025 Women's World Cup, India suffered a defeat at the hands of the Proteas in Vizag.
Similarly, in 2011, India could not win the group stage match against England as their clash in Bengaluru ended in a tie. 14 years later, India lost by four runs in a close women's game against England in Indore.
#4 An Indian opener with name starting from 'S' ends as 2nd highest run-scorer
In the 2011 Men's World Cup, Sachin Tendulkar was the top-scorer for the Indian team. Tendulkar finished second on the overall run charts, aggregating 482 runs in nine innings at an average of 53.55.
In the Women's World Cup 2025, Smriti Mandhana emerged as the top run-getter for India and also finished second on the overall leaderboard. Smriti scored 434 runs in nine innings at an average of 54.25. Incidentally, both Smriti and Sachin hail from Maharashtra.
#5 The trophy came after 3 seasons of a T20 league in the country
IPL launched in the year 2008. Three seasons later, India won the 2011 Men's World Cup trophy. Similarly, the WPL launched in the year 2023, and three seasons later, the women's team has won the ODI World Cup.
Another coincidence is that the Indian captain was involved in the finish of the match. While MS Dhoni smashed the winning hit in the 2011 World Cup Final, Harmanpreet Kaur took the last catch to seal the deal for India in the Women's World Cup 2025 Final.
