2-time WWE champion to show up on AEW Dynamite and cost Mercedes Mone another title? Exploring the possibility

Mercedes Mone has been experiencing a major decline in AEW over the last few months. The same could continue at the onset of the new year with a former two-time WWE champion costing her an upcoming high-stakes bout.

The aforementioned star, who is the reigning ROH Women's World Champion, is Athena. She had been seen teaming up with Mercedes Mone for a while in tag team matches. The duo challenged Babes of Wrath (Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale) for the AEW Women's World Championships at the Worlds End 2025 pay-per-view.

Despite a valiant effort, the champions retained their titles, as Nightingale rolled up Mone for the pinfall. Moreover, Athena was visibly upset with her partner getting pinned. This could be a sign of major tensions between the duo and could explode on the upcoming edition of Dynamite: New Year's Smash.

The CEO has announced that she will defend her TBS Championship against Willow Nightingale at the show. The demise of Mone could continue, this time at the hands of her own tag partner, Athena. Being under the impression that it was Mone's fault at Worlds End, she could shock the world by attacking and costing her the TBS title on Dynamite, and bringing an end to her record-setting title reign. Moreover, it could also be the start of a full-fledged program between Mone and Athena for the Fallen Angel's ROH title, with the Ultimo Mone seeking revenge by ending her record-breaking title reign.

Mercedes Mone issued a warning to Willow Nightingale

After her defeat at AEW Worlds End 2025, Mercedes Mone lashed out at Willow Nightingale in a backstage segment. The TBS Champion challenged her to a match and vowed to lay a huge beatdown on her.

With the stage set for a huge title match, it remains to be seen who will walk out of the first Dynamite of 2026 with the gold.
