More than likely, the New York Yankees will be buyers at this year's Major League trade deadline.
The deadline is still two months away, but now that each team has played around 60 games on their schedule, we have a better understanding of who the contenders and pretenders are.
The Yankees are contenders in the American League and could look to make an upgrade on the left side of their infield. Shortstop Anthony Volpe has had a solid start to the year following his demotion to Triple-A and subsequent promotion.
New York has Jose Caballero as an option at the position, too, but Mike Axisa of CBS Sports doesn't rule out the Yankees making a big trade with the Houston Astros.
"More than a few teams would be happy to engage the Astros about [Jeremy] Peña now to avoid needing a shortstop in the offseason," Axisa wrote Wednesday. "If the trade package includes a young shortstop prospect to replace Peña and some desperately needed pitching, don't the Astros have to consider it?"
Axisa briefly mentioned the Yankees as one of the clubs that could pursue Pena from the Astros. He's a former World Series MVP and a Gold Glove infielder who is an immediate upgrade over Volpe.

If Pena does come to the Bronx, Caballero can be moved around the diamond in a utility role.
It may cost the Yankees a couple of pitching prospects to get the deal done, but Volpe's inconsistent play in the first three years of his career is not a great indication that he'll be able to turn things around dramatically.
