We know how close Deion Sanders was to leaving Colorado for Cowboys

The rumors were there.

They said that Deion Sanders might leave his college football head coaching position with the Colorado Buffaloes to take charge of the Dallas Cowboys.

The reality wasn't the same, though.

Sanders told Front Office Sports this week that it wasn't actually a consideration for him at all.

“They weren’t real at all,” Coach Prime said of the rumors. “I liked playing the pro game, but I wouldn’t enjoy coaching the pro game. It’s a different game.”

Some would point out that the college football world is becoming more and more professionalized.

But to Sanders' point, it is still quite different. Recruiting and the transfer portal and coaching young men is a different beast than the NFL landscape. Some coaches prefer one side, and some the other, but most do seem to have a preference.

The rumors didn't pertain to this offseason, but rather the 2025 coaching cycle -- the Cowboys didn't keep Mike McCarthy, but they ended up landing on Brian Schottenheimer as head coach.

At Colorado, Sanders was coming off his last season with his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, as well as two-way superstar Travis Hunter. If there was a logical breaking-off point, that was it.

Turns out, though, that Sanders was perfectly fine staying with the Buffaloes and figuring things out.

“I’m focused on winning and getting these kids through college so they have degrees, and they’re able to attain tremendous professions even after football is over,” Sanders told Front Office Sports. “But I have no thought process of the NFL whatsoever.”

For the Colorado football fans out there, that's great news. For the Cowboys, they're just hoping that Schottenheimer's second season can be better than his first.
