Victor Wembanyama vs. Tim Duncan: How Spurs star's first playoff run compares to San Antonio legend

1 hour ago 4

When NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum announced on May 16, 2023, that the Charlotte Hornets had been awarded the No. 2 pick — officially meaning that the San Antonio Spurs had won the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes — a wave of nostalgia washed over NBA fans.

A generational big man in a Spurs uniform, coached by Gregg Popovich? They had seen this movie before, and multiple times. David Robinson was a force to be reckoned with in San Antonio. Then, the Spurs lucked out with the No. 1 pick in 1997, claiming Tim Duncan — and the rest was history, with Robinson being around for two titles, and Duncan adding another three.

Naturally, Wembanyama has been compared to Robinson and Duncan since the moment he walked across the NBA Draft stage. But flash forward to June 2026, and he's reviving their legacy in San Antonio, making the Spurs title contenders as just a 22-year-old rising superstar big man.

In fact, Wembanyama's first playoff run is already looking pretty similar to Duncan's second, in 1999, when he and Robinson brought the first Larry O'Brien Trophy back to San Antonio.

Here's a look at how Wembanyama's debut playoff run in 2026 looks side-by-side next to Duncan's emergence in the 1999 postseason.

While Wembanyama's first playoff run has arrived in his third NBA season, dealing with some injuries and the Spurs' inconsistency over his first two years, Duncan joined Robinson as a rookie in 1997-98, and the elite big men made the Spurs contenders immediately.

San Antonio made the playoffs in Duncan's first season, with Popovich guiding the squad to 56 wins as Duncan won Rookie of the Year. However, the Spurs' success ran out in the second round in 1998 — they were eliminated by Karl Malone and the Jazz.

Still, Duncan made it clear that he would be an elite star for years to come, averaging 20.7 points per game in the playoffs. Flash forward to 2026, and Wembanyama, in his first playoff run, has also been a superstar on the big stage, also finding more team success than Duncan did initially.

Victor Wembanyama 2026 vs. Tim Duncan 1999 playoff runs

Recently, NBA fans picked up on a trend: Wembanyama's first playoff run may not look exactly like Duncan's, as the former big man was eliminated in the second round in 1998, but their age-22 playoff runs are looking eerily similar.

Duncan's age 22-playoff run was his second NBA season in 1998-99, while Wembanyama's has arrived this season, 2025-26, his third in the league.

Here's a look at how each Spurs big man fared in their respective age-22 playoff runs:

First round

  • Wembanyama, 2026: Beat Trail Blazers (4-2)
  • Duncan, 1999: Beat Timberwolves (3-1)

This year, Wembanyama opened his playoff debut by going for 35 points in a Game 1 win over Portland, and even with the Spurs star missing multiple games due to a concussion, his team went on to win the series.

In 1999, Duncan's Spurs opened the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, and they handled business against a young Kevin Garnett and the Timberwolves in the first round. Duncan had a 26-point, 16-rebound performance in Game 1, and the Spurs won the series in four games.

Second round

  • Wembanyama, 2026: Beat Timberwolves (4-2)
  • Duncan, 1999: Beat Lakers (4-0)

This year, Wembanyama took down the franchise in Round 2 that Duncan did in the first round of the 1999 playoffs: Minnesota. In a matchup against another French center, Rudy Gobert, and the electrifying Anthony Edwards, Wembanyama led the Spurs to a six-game series win, including 39 points in Game 3.

Duncan, meanwhile, found no trouble with the early version of the Shaquille O'Neal-Kobe Bryant Lakers, with San Antonio sweeping the series. Duncan had 25 points in Game 1 and 37 in Game 3.

Western Conference Finals

  • Wembanyama, 2026: Beat Thunder (4-3)
  • Duncan, 1999: Beat Trail Blazers (4-0)

In order for Wembanyama to reach his first Finals, he had to take down the defending champions, a team he was quickly building a rivalry with. Between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander becoming the two-time MVP and his history with Chet Holmgren, a motivated Wembanyama first put on an all-time classic in Game 1 for a road win, then went on to guide the Spurs to a Game 7 win on the road.

Duncan's trip to his first Finals, on the other hand, came much easier. He was matched up against the Trail Blazers, led by Rasheed Wallace and Damon Stoudemire — and San Antonio's size was too much for Portland to handle, being swept.

NBA Finals

  • Wembanyama, 2026: TBD vs. Knicks
  • Duncan, 1999: Beat Knicks (4-1)

After each had to beat the Timberwolves and Trail Blazers to reach the big stage at 22 years old, Wembanyama and Duncan have both been matched up in the Finals against the Knicks — and both times, New York was looking for its first title since 1973.

Of course, part of the reason the Knicks haven't won a championship since then is Duncan's Finals MVP performance in the 1999 Finals, averaging 27.4 points, 14.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game to guide San Antonio to a five-game series victory. He and Robinson brought home the first championship in Spurs franchise history, besting Allan Houston, Latrell Sprewell and company.

In 2026, Wembanyama will now be tasked with beating Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and the modern Knicks en route to his first title.
