Everyone at the World Baseball Classic is bringing their best and giving their all. After all, the opportunity to represent your country only comes along once in a while.
But, there are mismatches. The 2023 tournament featured an 20-run loss by China, an 11-run loss by Canada and 10-run losses by Israel and Great Britain.
In 2026, a mercy rule could prevent games from getting too out of hand, which would have been a legitimate possibility considering the talent on the rosters of some of the top contenders.
Here's what you need to know about the World Baseball Classic mercy rule and how a game could end early.

Does World Baseball Classic have a mercy rule?
The World Baseball Classic once again has a mercy rule, which could allow a game to end as early as after five innings.
Because teams can score as much as they can within the first five innings, there is no limit to a team's margin of victory. For example, South Korea defeated China 22-2 in the 2023 tournament, but the game couldn't end until after the fifth inning.
Here's a complete breakdown of the mercy rule at the 2026 World Baseball Classic and when it applies.
World Baseball Classic mercy rule
The mercy rule during pool play and the quarterfinal round is fairly simple: a game will end if a team is leading by at least 15 runs after the fifth inning or by at least 10 runs after the seventh inning.
The rule also applies if that margin is reached after the designated inning. For example, a game between Puerto Rico and Israel ended after eight innings in 2023 when Puerto Rico stretched its lead from nine to 10 in the eighth inning.
There is no mercy rule in the semifinals or championship game. The three games between those two rounds must last at least nine innings.
