The Pittsburgh Penguins made an intriguing move to help both their present and their future on Friday before the NHL trade deadline.
They've acquired Elmer Soderblom from the Detroit Red Wings, according to insider Elliotte Friedman, a deal that will cost a 2026 third-round pick in return.
The Penguins have been quiet this week as much of the rest of the league has made deals.
This, though, is a chance at adding a quality young player.

Who is Elmer Soderblom?
Elmer Soderblom is a 24-year old Swedish winger.
He's also 6-foot-8, which is awesome.
The Red Wings took Soderblom in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft.
He made his debut with 21 games in 2022-23, then played 26 games in 2024-25.
This season, Soderblom has appeared in 39 games with two goals and an assist. He also has 64 hits.
All told, he has 86 NHL games with 128 hits, 11 goals and 11 assists.
He's a fascinating player type at his size, so it'll be interesting to see how the Penguins decide to use Soderblom.
The contending Red Wings decided he didn't fit their plans for the rest of the season, but Pittsburgh is likely thinking about both the present and future with this deal.
