The Washington Wizards have pulled off a masterclass this season, landing two perennial All-Stars in Trae Young and Anthony Davis at the trade deadline, all while maintaining their lottery pick. This could be their final one, and end the rebuild to go into contender mode.
In the latest NBA Mock Draft by Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley, the Wizards are rewarded with the No. 1 overall pick, and get themselves Brigham Young University's AJ Dybantsa. Dybantsa would give the Wizard a future after Young and Davis are done, all while creating a Big Three with them in the meantime.
“The race for No. 1 has felt too close to call for much of the pre-draft season, but Dybantsa might be pulling away from the pack. This oversimplifies things, but he sort of offers all of Darryn Peterson's upside without the injury risk and nearly all of Cameron Boozer's elite production without the worries about growth potential…While the Wizards used their in-season trades for Anthony Davis and Trae Young to grease the gears for a return to relevance, they still find themselves without a clear-cut centerpiece. Hit this lottery's jackpot to collect Dybantsa as the prize, and that itch would be immediately scratched,” Buckley wrote.
This past season with the Cougars, Dybantsa averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals in 34.8 minutes per game. He carried the Cougars, and proved he could be a franchise star.
As a purebred scorer, he would thrive in Washington. Young’s insane playmaking ability would get him the shots he needs, and Davis’ rebounding ability would get him second chances.
Overall, the Wizards would have an elite scoring playmaker, an elite scoring rebounder, and a purebred scorer who can do a little of everything. With them as their Big Three, they could be a top contender in the East next season.
