Arne Slot has opened up on whether Liverpool will sign new defenders in the January transfer window. He denied such claims, adding that they have bigger issues in other areas of the pitch.

The Reds won the Premier League title last season and then spent over £400 million. They signed centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma, but he suffered an ACL injury. They failed to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace on Deadline Day.

Liverpool have struggled this season, and many fans and pundits have claimed that they need to sign a defender in the January transfer window. When asked about it, Arne Slot said in a press conference (h/t TNT Sports):

"In the position that we are in, it’s the last thing on my mind. Maybe not for Richard [Hughes, sporting director], but it’s not a topic at all for me at the moment. We have three centre-backs, maybe Ryan [Gravenberch] and Wata [Endo] as well. Maybe you are not aware of it yet, but we have other positions that are maybe more of an issue."

Liverpool currently have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez as their three centre-backs. However, all three have struggled for consistency this season.

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool need to sign a centre-back in January

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher believes his former side need to sign a centre-back in January, among other signings. He highlighted Leoni's injury and said that they need a defender to compete this season. Carragher told Sky Sports:

"Liverpool need to spend in January, they need to buy a centre-back, they should have bought a centre-back in the summer. They didn't, and then the one centre-back they did buy, Leoni, a young Italian player, looked fantastic in the game that he played, a Carabao Cup game. Unfortunately, he got an ACL injury, so we won't see him until next season." "Liverpool are probably one injury away at centre-back from really derailing the season, so they have to go to the market in January," he added.

The Merseysiders have lost seven of their last 10 games across competitions, winning the other three. They have kept just three clean sheets in 11 Premier League games this campaign.

Arne Slot's side lost 3-0 against Manchester City at the Etihad in their previous game before the international break. They will next host Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday, November 22.
