Warriors' Steph Curry has major $136.7M contract decision to make for Golden State's future

The Golden State Warriors want Steph Curry to spend his entire career with the organization, and the belief is that he feels the same way. The Warriors do not currently have a championship-caliber roster, but they do have the opportunity to keep one of the greatest players to ever play the game in Golden State.

The entire NBA world has known for some time that the four-time champion has an extension waiting for him. It is a hefty extension, too.

“What the terms of a new extension look like for Curry will be completely up to him, as the Warriors are prepared to offer their star whatever he wants. If Steph wants the full $136.7 million through the 2028-29 season, he will get that. If he wants to take a discount to help the team, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. will have no problem with said deal," NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.

The window for Curry’s extension officially opened on Saturday.

“The window for Stephen Curry to sign an extension with Golden State is now open. From now until June 30, Curry is eligible to sign up to a two-year/$136.7M extension. Because of the Over 38 rule, 2 years is the maximum allowed in an extension. He can sign for up to 3 seasons if he waits until FA,” ESPN’s Bobby Marks posted.

However, there are a lot of implications riding on this extension. If Curry waits, it could create significant financial flexibility for Golden State. If he signs the extension immediately, it could put the Warriors in an even more difficult financial position.

“There's still players becoming contract extension eligible. By next week you'll start to see Steph Curry's name come up. On the 29th of August he's extension eligible for his contract. I have argued that it should be considered that Steph doesn't sign the extension yet. If he chooses to sign right now, he could get two years at $140 million. Obviously if that's what he says he wants, you give it to him. But if he doesn't sign his contract extension right now the Warriors could have over $100 million in salary cap space next summer," ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said.

There is a lot riding on the decision Curry is going to make. If he wants to prioritize the organization’s future, he could wait and potentially give the Warriors more flexibility to build a championship roster before he retires.

He could also decide that he simply wants to secure the money at this point in his career. A decision will eventually be made, but there is a lot of weight on Curry and what his choice could mean for the future of the Warriors.
