Unfortunately, San Antonio Spurs star center Victor Wembanyama is no stranger to injuries.
Wembanyama, who endured deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder toward the end of last season, missed several games earlier this season due to a calf strain.
In the fourth quarter of the Spurs’ Wednesday night contest against the New York Knicks, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft suffered a brutal injury that forced him to hobble back to San Antonio’s locker room with slightly over 10 minutes remaining.
ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel suggested that Wembanyama may have hyperextended his knee, and if his hunch is correct, the Spurs are in deep trouble.
Denver Nuggets standout big man Nikola Jokic suffered the same setback on Monday, and according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, he’ll need at least four weeks to recover before returning to the hardwood.
Although the Spurs have won games without Wembanyama in the lineup and have one of the most electric young cores in the league, they won’t be the same team if their most valuable player is on the bench for a somewhat significant period.
Hopefully, Wembanyama, who’s averaging 24.0 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.0 blocks per game while connecting on 51.4% of his field goals and 34.9% of his triples, only suffered a minor injury and won’t be a spectator for long.
