It’s typically challenging for franchises to celebrate a victory without knowing the extent of a key contributor’s injury.
While the San Antonio Spurs overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to defeat the New York Knicks 134-132 on Wednesday night, the main storyline of the contest was centered around Victor Wembanyama’s health.
The one-of-a-kind 7-foot-5 center was noticeably absent down the stretch of San Antonio’s recent home clash due to an injury.
Considering it isn’t easy to provide a clear diagnosis on the spot, the Spurs, like the rest of the NBA world, were unaware of Wembanyama’s exact injury, which likely caused panic to arise within the organization during and after their victory.
Shortly after San Antonio’s 24th win of the season, though, ESPN’s Shams Charania provided the Spurs with a helpful injury update on their former lottery pick.
Is Victor Wembanyama out for the season?
No, based on Sharania’s report, it doesn’t appear like Wembanyama will be sidelined for the rest of the year.
“Spurs star Victor Wembanyama suffered a slight hyperextension in his left knee in tonight's win over New York -- and initial tests came back negative and showed no major injury,” Charania wrote on X/Twitter.
There’s no question that Wembanyama and the Spurs dodged a bullet, as Wembanyama has helped make San Antonio's offense as dynamic as it has become.
If the Spurs want to dethrone the Oklahoma City Thunder in this year’s postseason, the organization’s most impactful contributor must be available.
Luckily, it's safe to say Wembanyama’s season won’t end prematurely for the second consecutive year.
