WWE hosted the latest edition of Saturday Night's Main Event this weekend, a program which featured one of the most important wrestling bouts of the year. The show has seemingly left a number of viewers with a bitter aftertaste, as was evident from fans chanting a rival promotion's name at Triple H afterwards.
This Saturday, the Stamford-based company presented the 42nd edition of SNME in the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC. The event marked a historic occasion in the history of the sport, as it featured John Cena wrestling his final match against Gunther. The bout ended with The Ring General successfully submitting the "Greatest Of All Time" with his highly effective sleeper hold, bringing to an end the latter's decorated two-decade-spanning career.
Although tributes have been pouring on for the Cenation leader from fans and industry peers alike, Triple H's booking of the legend's retirement bout (and of his retirement tour in general) has met with the disapproval of a vast section of the fanbase. In particular, viewers seemingly took issue with Cena being booked to tap out to Gunther, instead of simply passing out to his submission to lose the match.
Fans voiced their frustrations with WWE's Chief Content Officer quite clearly during the post-show after Saturday Night's Main Event when they started chanting for the company's primary rival promotion right now, AEW.
Fans have also been comparing Cena's final run to AEW's retirement programs for Sting and Bryan Danielson last year.
AEW star's tribute to WWE legend John Cena after his retirement
John Cena's influence on the pro-wrestling industry, as one of the biggest stars in the business, cannot be denied. Ahead of and after the former Undisputed Champion's final showdown against Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event, the "Face That Runs The Place" has received heartfelt messages congratulating him on finishing his celebrated career, from personalities from various promotions, including WWE, TNA and AEW.
Former All Elite Wrestling tag team champion Austin Gunn was one such name, taking to X/Twitter to share what appeared to be a photograph of Cena from his pre-match ring-introduction at SNME.
