The New Orleans Saints made a few big moves this offseason so far, with the additions of David Edwards as the new left guard and Travis Etienne Jr. as the new lead running back.

Of the two pickups in free agency, Etienne's signing is the far more interesting one. He's from Louisiana and is likely replacing Alvin Kamara in the starting lineup for New Orleans.

The initial reporting for Etienne's contract was a $52 million four-year deal, but Katherine Terrell of ESPN shared that this contract is a good deal different than that initial reporting, which makes the Etienne signing look a whole lot better.

Travis Etienne Jr.'s contract is a lot more team-friendly than initially reported

"Travis Etienne's contract details: 4 years, $24 million fully guaranteed, $12 million signing bonus, $11.85M APY," Terrell reports. "2026: $5M cap, $2M base (guaranteed). 2027: $13M cap, $10M base (guaranteed). 2028: $15M cap, $12M base ($4 million injury guaranteed). 2029: $14M cap, $11M base."

While it's not outright explained in Terrell's reporting, the main takeaway from this contract for Etienne is that this isn't exactly a four-year contract. Instead, it's a two-year deal.

The Saints are spending $24 million guaranteed on Etienne, with the 2026 and 2027 salaries guaranteed. If, after the 2027 season, the Saints want to get out of Etienne's contract, they can do so without much issue.

Etienne is 27 years old, and will be in New Orleans through his age 28 season before there are any questions asked about what his future with the team looks like.

If he thrives for the Saints, then his contract might be adjusted to lower the cap hit and keep him around for longer. But if he struggles, the Saints can cut him without a big cap penalty.

While the Saints technically have Etienne under contract for the next four years, in reality, this deal will be revisited after the second season of Etienne in New Orleans.

The Saints signed Etienne in the 2026 offseason, and in the 2028 offseason, Etienne's future will once again become a topic of discussion.

Instead of the lofty $52 million initial reporting for Etienne, in reality, it's effectively a $24 million two-year deal thanks to no guarantees beyond the 2027 season (barring injury).

This is a great contract for the Saints, as it gives them plenty of flexibility for Etienne if they want to keep him around long-term or part ways in two years.
