Oscars 2026 Best Dressed Celebrities: Nicole Kidman, Zoe Saldaña & More

Steven Spielberg was phoning home to find his date for the 2026 Oscars.

The E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial director accompanied his granddaughter Poppy Gavigan, 13, to her first-ever red carpet at the award ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood March 15.

For the rare family outing, Steven sported a classic black tuxedo and bowtie. Meanwhile, Poppy—whose parents are Steven’s stepdaughter Jessica Capshaw and her husband Christopher Gavigan—donned a light blue satin dress with a corset, which she paired with a red clutch purse and matching beaded necklace. Of course, this wasn’t the first time that the Jaws filmmaker—who was nominated at the ceremony for Best Picture for producing Hamnet—made the Oscars red carpet a family affair. In 2024, he brought Poppy’s older sister Eva, 15, as his date, and the night out also marked the teenager’s red carpet debut.

Although Steven, 79, clearly loves to be surrounded by family, he previously detailed how kids weren’t always part of his plan.

"I didn't want to have kids because it was not a kind of equation that made sense for me as I went from movie to movie to movie, script to script," he told Variety in 2022. "It never occurred to me till halfway through E.T.: I was a parent on that film. I was literally feeling like I was very protective of…my whole cast, and especially Drew [Barrymore], who was only 6 years old."

After the film, Steven’s mindset shifted.

"I started thinking, 'Well, maybe this could be my real life someday,'” he continued. “It was the first time that it occurred to me that maybe I could be a dad. And maybe in a way, a director is a dad, or a mom.”

“I really felt that that would be my big production," Steven added. "I have seven kids and six grandchildren, so E.T. worked for me very well."
