Tigers' Gleyber Torres predicted to be All-Star starting second baseman

The Detroit Tigers made a signing in the offseason that, at the time, didn't seem like a season-defining move. But after the first couple of months of the year, it's been a major reason for the team's success in 2025.

Gleyber Torres signed a one-year deal worth $15 million in the offseason after spending the previous seven years of his MLB career with the New York Yankees. Now with the Tigers, he's having a great season. He's having such a great year that an MLB insider predicted he'd be the starting second baseman in the 2025 All-Star game for the American League.

In an article from Bob Nightengale of USA Today, he named Torres as the favorite to be the AL All-Star team's starting second baseman.

"Don't look now," Nightengale writes. "But Yankees castoff Gleyber Torres of the Detroit Tigers could be the American League's starting second baseman at the All-Star Game. He's hitting .271 with a .778 OPS, best among AL second basemen."

The 28-year-old second baseman, in his first season with Detroit, is putting together a remarkable season so far. Across his 217 at-bats, Torres has 60 hits, 33 runs scored, 10 doubles, seven home runs, 34 RBIs, 34 walks, and 30 strikeouts. Torres also has four stolen bases.

His .377 on-base percentage is the highest on the Tigers of any batter with at least 20 at-bats. Torres' .419 slugging percentage is seventh among starters on the Tigers, but his calling card has been his ability to consistently get on base. With the great power hitters around him, all he has to do is get hits, walks, and get on base.

Overall, Torres has been the third-best hitter on the Tigers' roster, which sits atop the entire American League. He's only behind Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene, two players who have been having incredible seasons for Detroit as well.

Nightengale's prediction for Torres to make the All-Star team was the best possible outcome the team could've expected after they signed him in free agency. The Tigers are in first place, thanks in large part to the contributions of Torres at second base.
