ESPN's Stephen A. Smith sat down with Complex recently to discuss a wide range of topics, including the lengthy amount of time it took to negotiate his latest contract.
The journalist was interviewed by the network's Speedy Morman, who asked him a little bit about his net worth, while also taking the opportunity to slide in a question about the reported $100 million contract extension he signed, which, to the surprise of many, took 275 days according to Smith. "A quick Google search shows your net worth to be about $25 million..is that accurate?, asked Morman. "No," answered Smith. "Is it far off?," continued Morman. "Not really," Smith replied.
"So...it's pretty close," asked Morman half-laughing. "Not that close, but we'll see," was the answer Smith chose to give. So, that $25 million report isn't really far off, but at the same time, it's not that close either. Whatever you say Stephen A. Smith. Well, what about the reported $100 million contract? Morman asked about that as well.
"You signed a big contract over at ESPN...It's rumored to be five years, upwards up $100 million. Accurate?," asked the host. "No comment," replied Smith facetiously. Undeterred, Morman proceeded to ask Smith if he believes he is paid his worth. "Do I feel like I deserved more? Yes. But am I happy with what I have? Yes, because the money is enough. It was more than fair. It was a negotiation that took more than 275 days. But it ended up happening, and I ended up in a very happy place.
By our calculations, that "more than 275 days" remark by Smith means that it took nearly ten months for ESPN and Smith to come to an agreement on their contract, which is insane. As Smith said, however, it ended up working out and he ended up being happy, so...that's the most important thing.
