'Something went terribly wrong' with Max Domi's surgery after Maple Leafs season ended

1 hour ago 3

Max Domi played through a back injury during the 2025-26 season.

He appeared in 80 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and then he had surgery when the season ended.

There's where something went wrong, according to Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun.

Simmons reports that Domi chose to have the surgery done by his own surgeon rather than the one the Maple Leafs would've picked.

But then this:

"Something went terribly wrong with the surgery. For public consumption, no one is saying what. Almost every operation on a professional athlete is followed by a press release that indicates that successful surgery has taken place. Whatever happened here wasn’t deemed successful. Apparently, Domi could not walk in the days following surgery, which created significant alarm. His status remains in doubt for the coming season."

That's a really scary situation.

It was clear something wasn't quite right when the Maple Leafs put out this press release after the surgery:

"Forward Max Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season. Due to complications arising from the procedure, Domi will be out indefinitely. Domi will continue working with the club's medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp."

That wasn't the standard, all-is-good kind of news. It suggested concern.

The reporting from Simmons affirms that something isn't right here.

Now, the 31-year old forward's health becomes of the utmost concern for Maple Leafs fans.

It's less about whether he can play hockey again. It's about whether he's healing and getting better and just able to live comfortably.

Domi is still under contract with the Maple Leafs for two more seasons at $3.75 million per season. Right now, there's much more to worry about.
