Shedeur Sanders has new competition for worst jersey retirement in college sports

1 hour ago 3

When Shedeur Sanders had his No. 2 jersey retired at Colorado, the ceremonious event was met with backlash. Many said the decision was due to Deion Sanders being the head coach.

While there's no true confirmation of that, nothing really supported why Shedeur should've received the honor when he did. He led the Buffs to a 9-4 record with a blowout loss to BYU in the Alamo Bowl in his final year. Some said it was a participation retirement, Daddy Ball, and wonder why other CU alumni with more decorated careers weren't included.

However, Sanders now has competition for the worst retirement in college sports. North Carolina star freshman Caleb Wilson earned AP second-team All-American honors this week. This guarantees he'll have his jersey retired in the rafters in Chapel Hill.

The former five-star is out for the NCAA Tournament due to injury, and is likely headed to the NBA after a one-and-done season. But automatic retirement? This seems like one of the worst decisions for UNC, who have over 50 players' names on display in the Dean Dome.

While Sanders was scrutinized for his lack of accomplishments, Wilson's looks worse. The Tar Heels standout had a decent season, which ended for reasons beyond his control, but maybe it's time to review the process and strip back the automatic clause. It seems way too premature to hand out the honor right away as well. No waiting period at all?

There hasn't been much blow back over Wilson becoming UNC's second freshman to be retired. Just seems like the rules need a reboot with the new era in college sports and who should be immortalized?
