Romeo Doubs' $18 million contract update involves non-Packers outcome

Romeo Doubs is heading for free agency.

The more that analysts break down his situation, the more it seems like the Green Bay Packers will soon be a part of the wide receiver's past.

The latest analysis comes from Mark Oldacres of Packers Wire, who first takes a crack at projecting what Doubs might get paid and comes up just a bit shy of $20 million per year.

"The comps for the type of contract Doubs should command in free agency should fall between Khalil Shakir at $13.25 million per year and Jakobi Meyers at $20 million, with the likes of Cooper Kupp ($15 million), Jerry Jeudy ($17.5 million) and Christian Kirk ($18 million) all in that range as well," Oldacres writes.

That aligns pretty well with other projections, with ESPN recently speculating Doubs could actually reach that $20 million per year benchmark.

"Doubs ended the season playing some of his best football and has momentum going into free agency," Oldacres writes. "He was a vital part of the Packers offense during his time with the Packers."

There are just too many wideouts in Green Bay for Doubs to make sense to bring back on that level of contract.

"With first-round pick Matthew Golden ready to take on a bigger role, and plenty of talent at receiver in the form of Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks and Savion Williams, spending that kind of money on a receiver is unlikely to be a priority for Green Bay this offseason," Oldacres writes.

That's going to set up another team to land Doubs, who was efficient in a relatively middling role at times with the Packers.

The hope for a new team will be that Doubs' production translates to a bigger role in a pass-happier scheme, and the expectations from most directions are that it probably will work just fine.
