WWE WrestleMania 39 ended with Cody Rhodes failing to capture the Undisputed WWE Championship. Roman Reigns' run on top went one more year before Rhodes claimed the gold, and it seemed to be the Tribal Chief's idea.
Yesterday, a report by Brandon Thurston on POST Wrestling revealed that Vince McMahon was allegedly a part of the promotion's creative after his retirement in 2022. In early 2023, Nick Khan claimed that McMahon was not a part of their creative in any way. However, a text from Thurston's report shows that McMahon may have been involved with the product as late as February 2023.
On Wrestling Observer Radio last night, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez went over the latest information and what it meant for the lawsuit between TKO shareholders and McMahon. The Cody Rhodes-Roman Reigns feud was brought up, with Meltzer stating that Roman went to McMahon with the idea to extend the feud by beating Rhodes. Originally, Rhodes was set to defeat the Tribal Chief.
According to Meltzer, "it was Roman Reigns' call." Supposedly, Reigns believed the moment would mean more when Rhodes won it the next year. Considering how things turned out, he apparently managed to convince the former Chairman.
Vince McMahon confirmed the WrestleMania change with WWE officials through text messages
Thurston's report highlighted several statements and texts showing that officials expected to see Vince McMahon back in the fold after originally stepping away in 2022. The day Vince retired, Mark Shapiro sent out a message claiming that Nick Khan and Stephanie McMahon would take over WWE for nine months before Vince returned.
Texts later on in the report show that the timetable was accurate, as McMahon was messaging Paul "Triple H" Levesque and Bruce Prichard about "changed WrestleMania plans" in February 2023. McMahon sent a summary of the texts, like the one below, to Nick Khan.
Text from me to Paul and Bruce: " Hey guys just double checking. Does Roman [Reigns] and Cody [Rhodes] know the new creative re [WrestleMania] and next year ?"Khan responded, seemingly telling McMahon to use the Signal app with the text, "langis." A month later, Khan would speak to CNBC's Morgan Brennan, denying the claim that McMahon had been or would be involved in creative.
