WWE legend William Regal made waves recently when he took to Twitter, urging today's wrestlers to ease up on dangerous neck bumps. Many competitors, both active and retired, have come to Regal's side in an attempt to quell tribalism and reduce injuries across the board. Now, AEW's Jeff Jarrett has responded.
The initial comment drew heavy criticism from AEW fans, with some believing Regal was taking a shot at the promotion after Kyle Fletcher took a nasty landing on his neck at World's End. Regal never specified what caused his original statement. Thankfully, it was confirmed that Fletcher didn't suffer any significant damage.
Now, Jeff Jarrett has weighed in on the matter. On the latest edition of My World with Jeff Jarrett, the multi-time world champion addressed the WWE star's comments, claiming that the game has changed, and what's most important is preventative measures.
"I think you have to have not just reactive - if something is out of whack - I think you got to have preventative maintenance. I credit my mindset on not just cardio and stretching, but nutrition and preventative measures," said Jarrett on My World with Jeff Jarrett (H/T The Wrestling Observer)Jarrett stated that it's up to the wrestlers of today to keep themselves in peak condition, stretching, focus on their nutrition, and get to the gym to make sure they can handle the damage they put themselves through. Because, at this point, we're not turning back the wheel.
"There's no chance in hell any of these guys are going to say, 'No, no, no, I'm not going to do that because of the long term.' We didn't do it when we were their age," claimed Jarrett. (H/T The Wrestling Observer)WWE's William Regal and more urge wrestlers to take care of their bodies
Regal's original tweet left the comments turned off as an attempt to preemptively shut down overly aggressive responses. The WWE Hall of Famer detailed his issues with neck problems while also mentioning Bryan Danielson and the late Mitsuharu Misawa, the latter of whom passed away in 2009 when a back suplex broke his neck.
"After Misawa San passed from his neck problems I thought it would stop this nonsense but it's got worse and whenever I talk to people about doing it it's "well it doesn't hurt..." Believe me it will."WWE's Piper Niven and Ivar shared Regal's sentiments, and even AEW's Kenny Omega backed up the legend. Omega addressed the concerns fans shared about the "timing" of the message, but stated that Regal's concern came from a good place, urging everyone to drop the tribalism for a well-meaning conversation.
