Pittsburgh Steelers listed as best fit for free agent wide receiver

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t add an extra weapon for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the trade deadline as some expected them to. However, it’s not necessarily too late. If the Steelers want to add another pass-catcher for a potential playoff run, they could do still do so through free agency.

Pittsburgh was recently listed as an ideal fit for veteran free agent wide receiver Tyler Boyd by Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report.

“Tyler Boyd isn't the player he once was, but it's still surprising he hasn't found a home this season. An experienced, savvy route-runner, he should still have something to offer,” Knox wrote. “… The Steelers would make sense, as they could use a veteran receiver and didn't add one at the trade deadline.”

This isn’t the first time that Boyd has been linked to the Steelers, probably because of his Pittsburgh roots. Boyd, a native of Clairton, Pennsylvania, played college football at the University of Pittsburgh, and he has a lot of family in the city. He would certainly be open to playing for his hometown team.

Back in June, Boyd said that he would embrace an opportunity to suit up for the Steelers and to play for head coach Mike Tomlin, who he considers a friend.

"Absolutely," he said. "You know, all my family is here. I'd be able to have the majority, all of my family, be able to support me.

"I'm real cool with [Mike] Tomlin. He's always been a good person. ... When I was at Pitt, we had a good relationship,” he added. “After practice, I'd walk over there and talk to AB [Antonio Brown] and those guys, talk to Tomlin, just pick at different things where I could get better and get a feel of some guidance. He was always a great guy and we always spoke. I think we had a great friendship.”

On paper, adding a low-cost, low-risk receiver like Boyd would make sense for the Steelers. He’s an experienced veteran who could quickly pick up the playbook and provide them with some additional depth at a relatively thin position. Perhaps they'll look into it.
