On November 6, 2025, Variety reported that Netflix and Sony Pictures have finalized an agreement for the sequel to the record-breaking animated hit KPop Demon Hunters.

According to the report, the follow-up film is set for a 2029 release. Notably, the production timelines could shift depending on development progress. The announcement comes months after fans had been speculating about a sequel, given the first movie’s massive global success.

KPop Demon Hunters was released in June this year. It quickly became Netflix’s most-watched title of all time, surpassing Squid Game with over 300 million cumulative views. The film mixed K-pop performances with supernatural action. It followed the story of pop idols Rumi, Mira, and Joy as they balanced fame with their secret lives as demon hunters.

Its soundtrack, led by the fictional girl group HUNTRIX, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks. The movie songs, such as Golden and Soda Pop, became global chart-toppers.

While fans celebrated the official confirmation of the sequel, reactions were mixed over the long wait until 2029. Some felt the four-year gap was far too long, calling it “crazy” given the hype around the first movie.

An X user, @Nljigakulive, wrote,

"2029 is crazy but then again when you see the quality of animation and how long it took to make the first, it’s no surprise. Just sucks to get it announced so early and have to wait lol."

Others defended the timeline. They pointed out that animated films often take years to complete, while aiming for the same level of visual and musical perfection.

Respectfully they should have kept their mouth shut if we have to wait this long

i don't want to hear any complaining. this is perfectly normal. i wouldn't be surprised if this date gets pushed back either, and that's ok if that's what it takes for us to get quality art. remember there are real people making this and good work takes time✌️

@CultureCrave 2029? everyone will have moved on and completely forgotten about it by the time this movie comes around.

To everyone in shock, yes this IS how long it takes to make an animated movie when you want to make it top notch & not by compromising quality or adopting toxic work hours. Hell, the first one took 5+ why are y'all even complaining?!

Several users also expressed hope that Rumi and Jinu can reunite in the upcoming sequel. Fans couldn't help but express their excitement.

I hate when stuff gets announced 3+ years out from its release date like my patience is very thin

All we know about KPop Demon Hunters 2, production details, and returning creators

According to the reports, KPop Demon Hunters 2 will once again be co-directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who led the original. Kang previously shared in an interview with Variety that there were many stories left to tell with the characters in the sequel.

She said,

"We’ve set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes."

The first film was produced by Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Netflix. It was a collaboration that drew global attention to animated K-pop-inspired projects. Following its success, Netflix rewarded Sony with a reported $15 million bonus, bringing Sony’s total profit from the first film to nearly $40 million, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

Fans can also expect the return of HUNTR/X’s original voice cast, Arden Cho (Rumi), May Hong (Mira), and Ji-young Yoo (Zoey), whose performances in Kpop Demon Hunters were widely praised. While the sequel’s plot remains under wraps, early reports suggest that the story will delve deeper into the mythology and explore more complex emotional arcs for the trio.

As of now, KPop Demon Hunters 2 is targeting a 2029 global release; however, production schedules are subject to change. Until then, the first film remains available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
