The MLB trade deadline is officially two months away, and the speculative reports and rumors are pouring in. What a time to be alive for Pittsburgh Pirates fans, as they watch their team actually compete in the NL Central currently.
Could this lead to the Pirates being buyers this trade cycle? In a recent rumor piece by FanSided.com's Christopher Kline, which pairs a 'perfect' trade deadline target with all NL Wild Card teams, the Pirates are being urged to link with the Baltimore Orioles for 2X MLB All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman.
It remains unclear what the Orioles may/may not do at the trade deadline, but the Pirates are one catcher away from having a pretty complete offense.
Could Adley Rutschman be on the move?
This is the big question surrounding the Orioles this summer. And it's not like trading Adley necessarily hurts/helps Baltimore's chances to making the playoff, it might just be time to offload Adley if he isn't going to be extended.
Here is why Kline believes Adley in a Pirates uniform makes sense:
"Adley Rutschman is a free agent after 2027, and there's zero sign of an imminent extension from the Orioles. The switch-hitting catcher is finally healthy and enjoying his most productive season in a while, with seven home runs and a .799 OPS. Samuel Basallo is already on the roster and mashing, though, which means the O's will not need to worry about Rutschman's successor. Selling high in a lost season is the smart business decision."
There is still conflicting reports on whether the Orioles will actually put their former No.1 overall pick on the proverbial trade block, but Kline does make a good point, and it finally might be the time for the Pirates to push their chips all-in with hopes of making the playoffs.
