The Pittsburgh Pirates came into the 2026 MLB season without Konnor Griffin, their top prospect, in the Major Leagues. He started 2026 in the minors.
But, on Thursday, it was revealed that Griffin was coming up to the Majors for the Pirates' first home series of the 2026 season. Griffin will be the starting shortstop on Friday, April 3rd, as the Pirates welcome the Baltimore Orioles to Pittsburgh.
That's not all the good news on Griffin for Pirates fans. ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that the Pirates and Griffin have a new deal agreed to worth $140 million over nine years, locking Griffin in Pittsburgh for a while.
Pirates to extend Konnor Griffin to $140M deal
"Konnor Griffin's deal with the Pirates: nine years, $140 million," Olney reports. "They're still working on finalizing."
This massive contract decision from the Pirates is a no-brainer. Being able to lock up Griffin long-term, someone with such high potential that many believe can be the next superstar, makes too much sense.
Even though he's yet to make his MLB debut, the Pirates and Griffin have this massive $140 million deal over the next nine years in the works.

Not that he needed to prove anything before getting this deal in the minor leagues this year, but in five games, he hit .438 with a .571 on-base percentage and a .625 slugging percentage, good for a ridiculous 1.196 OPS.
This spring, Griffin had a .749 OPS with four home runs and nine RBIs. He looked good, but didn't make the Opening Day roster.
But it's all coming together, as Griffin will now make his MLB debut in front of a home crowd in Pittsburgh, as the Pirates' top prospect is getting the call-up to the Majors at the perfect time.
He's also on the cusp of inking a massive $140 million, nine-year deal that will keep him around through the 2034 season.
