Browns owner makes intriguing starting QB statement

1 hour ago 4

Who Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken picks as his starting quarterback is going to make headlines, regardless of who he chooses.

If it is Shedeur Sanders, then many will question what that means for Deshaun Watson, and vice versa.

For most, the idea of Sanders getting first crack at it after finishing last year as the starter is a good bet.

But we don't know how the offseason will shake out, and now we have owner Jimmy Haslam, who has thrown up the idea that Watson has a great chance at being the starter, despite not playing since Week 7 of 2024 after back-to-back Achilles injuries.

"Deshaun has a great chance, fresh start, offensive-minded coach, who has in his past been able to work with all kinds of different quarterbacks and make them successful," Haslam said via ESPN.

Browns QB competition open

So, all three quarterbacks in Sanders, Watson, and Dillon Gabriel are going to be vying for the starting job next season under Monken.

It does feel like a two-horse race between Sanders and Watson, and if Haslam is confident that Deshaun can win the job, Sanders will need a great offseason.

Granted, Watson is 9-10 in his time with the Browns, and we sort of know what we are getting with him. Sanders, on the other hand, struggled last year, but we saw glimpses of his talents, as he went 3-4 in his seven games.

So, there isn't a definitive leader of the QB pecking order yet, but going by Haslam's comments, Watson has as good a shot as anyone.

Make of that what you will.
