Phillies' Rob Thomson might already be on hot seat before Opening Day

The Philadelphia Phillies, entering the 2026 season, have plenty of optimism for a World Series run. It's a great lineup, a deep and very talented bullpen, and a strong starting rotation, even without Ranger Suarez and Zack Wheeler to begin the year.

But, with such a great roster comes big expectations. And for the Phillies' manager, Rob Thomson, those expectations could also be trouble.

Dayn Perry of CBS Sports called out Thomson as one of a few managers coming into the 2026 season on the hot seat. After the Phillies' postseason struggles the last two years, Thomson might already be on the hot seat.

Rob Thomson might already be on hot seat

"Thomson and his steady hand have piloted the Phillies to four playoff berths in as many seasons, two straight division titles, and a pennant in 2022," Perry writes. "That said, the core is aging and there's a bit of a staleness surrounding the organization as Dave Dombrowski's laudably consistent efforts to maintain a winning roster may have reached their upper limits."

The Phillies have a good chance to make the postseason once again this season, and if they can't make it deep into October, Thomson's job might be at stake.

While Thomson is under contract through the 2027 season, if things go south in 2026, especially if the beginning of the year is a slog like it was in 2022 with Joe Girardi, the Phillies might be forced to make a change.

There have been questions about Thomson's status on the team for a little while now, and it would hardly be a surprise if he were to be fired if this season doesn't go well. A World Series title, and his job would be secure for a while.

But the question about Thomson's future would be a lot more interesting if another season like what happened in 2024 and 2025 occurs again in 2026.

A postseason appearance, making the NLDS, but not making it any deeper, would create an interesting question for the Phillies. Would they fire Thomson after another disappointing postseason exit? It's possible.

This year will be a very important one for the Phillies. Their core is getting older, and there might not be much time left with the roster, thanks to multiple players hitting free agency after 2027.

Thomson might already be on the hot seat, despite the Phillies season not even starting. It's an interesting situation, and one to keep close attention to as the year progresses.
