A year ago, Dallas Wings fans would have gladly taken any win they could get. Now, Paige Bueckers is apologizing for them.
The Wings continued their surprising early-season turnaround Monday night, defeating the Seattle Storm 79-56 to improve to 6-3 on the season. While the final score looked comfortable, the game itself was anything but pretty, something Bueckers made clear immediately after the victory.
Talking after the game
Speaking following the game, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year couldn't help but laugh at what unfolded on the court.
"We want to continue to build and learn, through wins, through losses," Bueckers said. "It's a really long season — 44 games — so we don't want to think we're entitled to anything, and we don't want to get complacent."
Then came the line that quickly caught fans' attention.
"I feel bad for the people who are watching. They should get all their money back," Bueckers joked. "I don't even know what the field goal percentage was on both sides, but sometimes, you gotta win ugly."
The comment was classic Bueckers, honest, self-aware and funny, but it also highlighted something much bigger happening in Dallas.
Big time turn around
Last season, the Wings finished just 10-34 despite Bueckers putting together a stellar rookie campaign. Individual performances were there, but victories rarely followed. Now, only nine games into the 2026 season, Dallas already has six wins and sits firmly in the playoff conversation.

That shift has changed the standard.
Instead of celebrating every victory regardless of how it happened, Bueckers and her teammates are beginning to evaluate how they win. That's the mindset of a team expecting success rather than simply hoping for it. Monday's game certainly wasn't an offensive masterpiece. Seattle shot just 33 percent from the field, while Dallas managed only 36 percent. Neither team could find much rhythm for long stretches
Paige leads the way
Still, the Wings controlled the game when it mattered most. Bueckers finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists while serving as the steadying force for a Dallas team that found ways to win despite not having its best shooting night. More importantly, the Wings never allowed Seattle to seriously threaten down the stretch.
Championship contenders often talk about "winning ugly." It isn't always pretty, but good teams find ways to survive nights when shots aren't falling. Dallas isn't claiming contender status yet, but Monday's result offered another sign that this team is maturing. The Wings have now won three straight games and are one victory away from their longest winning streak since 2023.
That may be why Bueckers' postgame apology resonated so much. Fans probably don't need refunds after watching a 23-point win. But hearing the franchise star jokingly critique a comfortable victory says everything about how far expectations have risen in Dallas.
The Wings are no longer measuring progress by moral victories. They're measuring it by wins.
