Blue Jays-Marlins trade pitch sends $56M Cy Young winner to Toronto in World Series surge

The Toronto Blue Jays have been having a nightmarish season when it comes to the injury bug. Last season, the Atlanta Braves could never catch a break with injuries to their starting rotation.

This season, it seems like the Blue Jays are the team taking a constant beating. It is a shame, especially with Toronto making it to the World Series last season and forming a strong rotation this offseason.

“Going into the Toronto Blue Jays' 2026 redemption run, it looked like their pitching staff was aligning to be the best in the American League,” SI’s Maddy Dickens wrote.

Toronto is expected to be active at the trade deadline, with rumors continuing to swirl. The Blue Jays are expected to be in on the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes.

“Now that it’s becoming inevitable that the free-falling Detroit Tigers may have no choice but to trade two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal at the deadline, rival executives believe the bidding will come down to four finalists that not only can afford the remainder of his $32 million contract, but will also be willing to give up prized prospects: The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.

If Toronto can’t land Skubal, they could instead shift their focus to Miami Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara.

“This is the type of deal that would get the magic started. Alcántara isn't having a great season so far with a 4.66 ERA in 12 starts. While this is the case, Alcántara is a former Cy Young Award winner and is just 30 years old. He has a $21 million club option for the 2027 season as well. Alcántara still has star upside. The Blue Jays are a team that isn't afraid to take a swing. If there is a team out there that is going to get the ball moving, it wouldn't be shocking to see it be Toronto,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.

Adding Alcantara to Toronto would be a major boost, as the team is currently searching for reliable arms. Alcantara has the talent to help stabilize the rotation and push the Blue Jays back toward World Series contention.

Alcántara is currently on a $56 million deal. The Blue Jays would also be adding a strong clubhouse presence. When the rotation is fully healthy, having Alcantara as the fourth or fifth starter would give Toronto valuable depth. This type of move would energize the fan base and reinforce belief that a World Series run is possible.
