New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole enjoyed a rare distinction of being the only pitcher in MLB history to record 100 or more wins while suffering fewer than 70 losses through his first 260 career games. On Monday, Cole was joined by a Texas Rangers pitcher.
Jacob deGrom pitched five shutout innings in the 2-1 win against the St. Louis Cardinals. This was the 100th win of his MLB career, while his loss total is 69. Moreover, he has played 260 games exactly. On the other hand, Cole is currently 154-80 with a career 3.16 ERA.

Why Gerrit Cole and Jacob deGrom's achievements are special
For deGrom, this is an exceptional achievement despite the poor run support he got when he was with the New York Mets during his two Cy Young seasons. He famously finished the 2018 season with a 10-9 record despite an ERA of just 1.70, en route to his first National League Cy Young. While the injuries have damaged his consistency on the mound, he still figures to be one of the best run prevention pitchers in MLB history.
Meanwhile, Cole's path is equally excellent. Starting with the Pittsburgh Pirates and then for the Houston Astros, the Yankees ace has been phenomenal. His best season came in 2023, when he secured his first American League Cy Young after posting a 15-4 record with a 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts over 209 innings.
As far as this season is concerned, the Rangers ace is 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. Meanwhile, Cole just returned this season after missing the whole of last year due to Tommy John surgery. In two starts thus far, the right-hander is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 0.71 WHIP.
