The Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins had their classic Original Six rivalry play out at Bell Centre on Sunday. The see-saw battle saw five goals and two fights, with the Bruins getting the better in both situations.
With just 4 seconds on the clock, Nikita Zadorov and Jayden Strubble dropped the gloves. Zadorov got a few punches in before the referees broke up the fight. A few minutes later, at the 3:52 mark, Xhekaj and Tanner Jeannot squared off. The Habs defenseman, who tangled in his third fight of the season, went to the ground after the initial few punches.
Fans online were quick to troll Xhekaj, who is known to be the Canadiens' enforcer, as he's had little impact on Montreal's season, scoring 1 point in 17 games, aside from his physical play. Here are a few reactions:
"Wifi is garbage player. Out of league soon. Back to Costco. Loser," a fan wrote.@GinoHard_ @Pressbox2013 Wifi is garbage player Out of league soon. Back to Costco Loser
@GinoHard_ Wifi has never won a fair fight
@GinoHard_ Absolutely LOVE TO SEE IT!!! lol Habs fans in shambles right now
@GinoHard_ Arber was at the end of a minute and a half shift. He should pick his spots better.
@GinoHard_ xhekaj is a punching bag 💀
@GinoHard_ If he can’t fight then what is the point of him
According to the website TSLH, this was Xjhekaj's 24th major fight in the NHL. He usually doesn't hit the ground easily, having "won" 15 of those fights. Unfortunately, he has "lost" in all three of his fights this season. Before Jeannot, he fought the New York Rangers' Sam Carrick and the Philadelphia Flyers' Nic Deslauriers.
Bruins flaunt "amazing" penalty kill after win vs. Canadiens
The Bruins' 3-2 win on the road came on the back of a perfect penalty kill that went 7-for-7 on the night. In a game filled with penalties, the Bruins also had to kill two 5-on-3 opportunities, totalling 3:26. Bruins' David Pastrnak claimed that their penalty kill made them deserving winners.
“That’s the mojo in hockey. If you don’t score 5-on-3 you don’t deserve to win,” Pastrnak said. “Our guys did an amazing job killing it, so I think at the end it’s a well-deserved two points, and obviously all the credit goes to the penalty-killing and ‘Sway’.”Goaltender Jeremy Swayman made 26 saves and was able to fend off a late comeback from the Habs, who were down 3-1 in the game. Boston improved to a 12-8-0 while Montreal currently has a 12-6-2 record.
