The San Diego Padres were dealt a tough blow on Tuesday. They learned they would be without one of their frontline starters, Yu Darvish, for the 2026 season. Darvish underwent surgery to repair a flexor tendon and an internal brace in his elbow.
San Diego is also at risk of losing two other frontline starters, Dylan Cease and Michael King. Both are free agents and should acquire a ton of attention from other teams.
They are also without a manager for the 2026 season. So, the front office certainly has its work cut out for it over the winter.
MLB insider reveals Padres biggest needs after Yu Darvish news
Going into the offseason, the club has some glaring holes. The Athletic's Jim Bowden points out these glaring holes and expects the Padres to rebuild their starting rotation. That is, after they find a manager, of course.
"The Padres still need to hire a manager, something that is expected to get done this week. Once that's completed, they'll spend most of the offseason trying to rebuild their starting rotation as both Dylan Cease and Michael King are free agents and Yu Darvish out for the season after undergoing possibly career-ending surgery on his right elbow."
Bowden suggests the Padres will find their next manager sometime this week. After that, it is on to finding frontline starters and bolstering the rotation.
He also mentions the possibility that Yu Darvish's career may be over. It could be quite the challenge for Darvish (41) to return after having two major surgeries on his UCL.
