Mets trade proposal lands top-3 LHP prospect, $90M slugger from Red Sox for 2 players

This offseason has been a very busy one for the New York Mets. They've added Bo Bichette, Devin Williams, and traded for Freddy Peralta and Luis Robert Jr.

While the offseason has been busy, the Mets could still be looking to upgrade parts of their roster. Another blockbuster trade wouldn't be that surprising for this Mets team.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report proposed a trade for the Mets that would send Mark Vientos, Sean Manaea, and cash to the Boston Red Sox. In return, they would add a $90 million slugger and an elite lefty pitching prospect. It would be a coup for the Mets.

Mets trade proposal lands major coup from Red Sox

"Trade proposal: Boston Red Sox get 3B Mark Vientos, LHP Sean Manaea, cash; New York Mets get DH/OF Masataka Yoshida, LHP Connelly Early," Rymer proposes.

This trade would be a wild one for the Mets. They would be turning Manaea and Vientos, two players with shaky roles on the roster, into Early and Yoshida, two valuable players for the Mets.

As Steve Cohen has shown this offseason, money is not an issue. Taking on more of the Yoshida contract for the Red Sox is why this trade would work.

Rymer's proposal has the Mets covering $12.2 million of Yoshida's deal, enough to offset the Vientos contract, to justify this trade.

This trade would undoubtedly be unpopular from the Red Sox fan perspective. But, for Mets fans, this would be a coup for Vientos and Manaea.

Yoshida, while he has not lived up to the hype of his $90 million contract, would be a nice contact hitter for the Mets, as his career batting average is a very solid .282.

But, of course, the prize would be Early. The 23-year-old lefty pitching prospect is the 56th-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

Last season for the Red Sox, across four starts in the Majors, he had a 2.33 ERA in 19.1 innings of work. He had a 2.60 ERA in 21 games (18 starts) and 100.1 innings in the minor leagues last year as well. He would be an incredible get for the Mets in this trade proposal.

This trade proposal would cost them a lot of money, but considering Cohen's willingness to spend, this kind of trade would be a no-brainer for the Mets if they could get the Red Sox to agree to it.
