Contract situations are tough especially when they reach a standstill. George Pickens may have possibly notched one of the best receiving seasons in his career but was met with a Dallas Cowboys franchise tag instead. Clearly, the wide receiver deserved to be paid more and have a stable contract. Dak Prescott has seen this a lot of times before and offered some advice.
Cowboys quarterback gets real on Pickens' contract situation
Prescott has already seen contract negotiation standoffs like these in the past. CeeDee Lamb experienced this very same thing until the Cowboys had to restructure their deal in 2024. The very same deals with Ezekiel Elliot and Micah Parsons have also led to untimely departures. Now, it will be Pickens who gets to go on this months-long circus that could remove him from playing on the field altogether.
So, the Cowboys quarterback just had a very simple piece of advice, via Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News.
"George lives football. That’s the one thing about it: ‘Don’t change your love for football. Don’t get into the business mind of this.’ He played last year on a one-year deal for not even that much. If he can go for $30 million, whatever it is now — that’s the same thing I got when I was franchised — hey, go do it. At the end of the day, bet on yourself," Prescott declared.
Due to the Cowboys non-exclusive franchise tag, Pickens will only be making $27.3 million throughout a one-year deal. His numbers say that he should likely be earning more and Lamb even conceded that he would not be mad if that happened. Pickens had a career-high of 1,429 receiving yards on 93 receptions. This got him a second-team AP All-Pro nod and a Pro Bowl selection.
Much like every other offseason, this is going to be long for Cowboys fans. Will Pickens take Prescott's advice to heart or is it going to be another falling out?
