Kevin Durant skipped out on the New York Knicks as a free agent in 2019, and it appears now that he may have missed his chance for good.
ESPN’s Marc J. Spears revealed shocking details about the Phoenix Suns star’s trade saga. Sunday, it was reported that Durant originally included the Knicks in his list of preferred trade destinations before omitting them due to the team’s lack of interest.
Now, according to Spears, the Knicks seem to have been Durant’s first choice all along.
“[Durant] wanted the New York Knicks. He wanted to go there,” Spears said on ESPN’s NBA Today. “The Knicks have no interest in bringing him in.”
The Knicks are expected to be rather active this offseason, seeking out upgrades after making their first Eastern Conference Finals since 2000. However, the 15-time All-Star Durant will not be a part of those plans.
Spears mentioned that Durant’s age, 36, could be playing a significant factor in how teams across the NBA view his current value.
“There’s some fear from him and [his agent Rich Kleiman] that they’re hoping that there’s going to be respect at Kevin’s age to give him what he wants rather than try to trade him like he’s 31-years-old, which he’s not anymore,” Spears said.
Even at his age, Durant has shown no signs of slowing down, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists last season while shooting 53% from the floor and 43% from three-point range on his way to his 15th All-Star game.
