New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson is in the final year of a four-year, $60 million deal. Despite being one of the team’s most impactful players, the two sides haven’t discussed a contract extension.
Robinson is one of the league’s best offensive rebounders and rim protectors when he is healthy, but that’s been the exact issue throughout his Knicks’ tenure. Robinson has always struggled with injuries, but it has only gotten worse in recent seasons. He appeared in just 31 games in the 2023-24 season before injuring his ankle during the postseason, then appearing in just 17 games last season, and missing the first four games of this season.
SNY’s Ian Begley spoke about the lack of an extension from the Knicks, and says that if Robinson is healthy, his market should be rather solid if he hits free agency.
“There's going to be teams with cap space. If he's healthy, he's going to be very attractive on that open market,” Begley said. “Maybe the Knicks surprise me, and they do get a deal done in-season. If he has this impact on the floor when he's healthy, even though the Knicks are limiting him, teams know what he can do and he's continuing to show it.”
In short, not only is it pivotal for Robinson to stay healthy for the Knicks’ sake this season, but also for his own sake as he looks to secure a lucrative deal in the offseason, whether it’s from the Knicks or from another team in need of his services.
