The New York Jets have had a disastrous season and their misery continued in their Week 17 clash on Sunday when they squared up against the New England Patriots.

The Jets had no answer against the Patriots offense led by star quarterback Drake Maye. The Patriots star took a forearm a from Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson during the first half. Maye remained on the ground for a few seconds after Johnson hit his helmet.

Johnson was flagged for roughing up the passer and the Jets could stop Maye only that way because the Patriots quarterback ran circles around the New York defense.

Maye completed 17-of-19 of his attempts for 229 passing yards and four touchdowns, leading the Patriots to a dominant 35-3 lead at half time. Maye started the procession for the Patriots after finding tight end Austin Hooper for a two-yard touchdown on their first possession of the game in the first quarter.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn backed Jermaine Johnson despite ongoing slump

The Jets have been underwhelming this season, including Jermaine Johnson, who has managed just three sacks this season. The 26-year-old has not performed to the standards he set during the 2023 season with an Achilles injury in 2024 playing its part in his decline.

Despite his slump, Jets coach Aaron Glenn preached patience for the 26-year-old Pro Bowler.

“I think he’s still working his way to be the Jermaine that we all know, and he’s going to continue to do that,” Glenn said. “We’re playing against some pretty good tackles also, but he’s not going to use that as an excuse. "I know he feels the same way that he needs to go out there and make the plays he can make to help us be successful on defense.”

The Jets exercised a fifth-year and $13.4 million option on his rookie contract ahead of the 2025 season. He entered the Week 17 clash without a sack in five consecutive games.
