Defeating Gogmazios, the first Elder Dragon in Monster Hunter Wilds, will require hunters to use proper elemental weapons and be aware of a later elemental damage check. It is one of the more challenging hunts in the Forbidden Lands and can push you to your limits even if you are well-prepared.
In this Sportskeeda Gaming Monster Hunter Wilds guide, we will discuss how best to prepare for the Gogmazios hunt so you have a relatively easier time overcoming it. If you are still looking for its quest, check out our how to start Gogmazios quest in MH Wilds guide.
Gogmazios location and weaknesses in Monster Hunter Wilds
Gogmazios is fought in the Forgotten Machineworks below Oilwell Basin. You will need to be at least HR 100, and then you will have to start Extra Mission 6 by interacting with Olivia when prompted. The Specter of Their Sins Event Quest allows you to fight Gogmazios again.
Gogmazios weaknesses
Gogmazios is weak to Dragon and Fire elements. In the first two phases, you will need to use the latter to melt the oil on Gogmazios's skin and then switch to the former. You should also be using Slash- or Blunt-type weapons to deal the most damage. You will also want to focus your attacks on the head and the wingarms.

Gogmazios fight tips
- You should have high Fire Resistance for the Gogmazios fight in Monster Hunter Wilds. A Fire Resistance of 20 or more will make you immune to Fireblight.
- Guard Up and Aquatic/Oilslit Mobility comes in handy for this fight.
- Be aware of Environmental Traps to deal damage and disrupt Gogmazios.
- The Mending Mantle is a good item to have for this hunt.
Facing up against Gogmazios (Image via Sportskeeda Gaming || Capcom)Gogmazios hunt strategy - Phase 1
- Use Fire elemental weapon in this phase to melt the oil on Gogmazios and then use Dragon elemental weapon.
- Gogmazios usually unleashes three attacks in this phase: Lava Geysers, Downward Slam, and a forward lunge ending with a bite.
- If you have Guard Up, you can try to block attacks like oil spit.
- Focus your attacks on wingarms to bring Gogmazios down and then target its head.
- Environmental traps can deal significant damage to Gogmazios in this fight. In Phase 1, you can bring down a stack of Deteriorated Scrap Metal onto Gogmazios to deal upwards of 4000 damage. You will have to make sure Gogmazios is standing right beneath the structure before interacting with it.
- Climb to the raised area once Gogmazios starts shooting the fire laser.
Elderbreaker (Image via Sportskeeda Gaming || Capcom)Gogmazios hunt strategy - Phase 2
- The strategy of using the Fire and Dragon elemental weapon remains the same.
- In case of Environmental Traps, you will now have another stack of Deteriorated Scrap Metal, chunks of Blastcoal, and the Ancient Forge to attack Gogmazios with.
- Your goal should be to get the Elderbreaker weapon off its back. To do so, knock Gogmazios down and then focus your attacks on its back.
- The Elderbreaker will need to be connected to three Loose Nexus Nodes. Keep in mind that while you are connecting these, you are vulnerable to Gogmazios' attacks. You should be aware of any impending attacks headed your way and dodge whenever required.
- Once the three Nexus Nodes are connected, let the Elderbreaker charge to 100% before firing it.
The final phase against Gogmazios (Image via Sportskeeda Gaming || Capcom)Gogmazios hunt strategy - Phase 3
- Once enough damage is dealt in Phase 2, Gogmazios will head to the next area for the final stage of the battle. The Elder Dragon will be flying often during this phase and you are advised to use the Compact Anti-Wyvern Gun (Slinger Ammo you can gather from Gogmazios) to disrupt by aiming at the head, wings, and tail. Remember to charge before firing the shot.
- You can also drop the two rubble pillars (Environmental Traps) in this phase on Gogmazios to knock it down.
- For Phase 3, focus on using only Dragon elemental weapon. This also comes into play when Gogmazios starts charging his attack, and there is an elemental damage check. You have to do enough Dragon elemental damage before and during the charge-up to significantly decrease the damage and efficacy of Gogmazios' charged AOE attack. Nadia's prompts will help: "We're not keeping its power in check! Keep attacking!" ~ you are failing the check, "We seem to be containing its power! Keep it up!" ~ you are not failing the check, but you still need to do more damage, and "We've got its power in check!" ~ the check is successful.
- Once Gogmazios unleashes its special attack, you can take shelter behind Fabius' shield. A failed elemental damage check will render Fabius unable to block the damage. You can also try to block the attack yourself with a Guard Up weapon or a shield (though Fabius is the best option here).
