There are two places called Kansas City.

One is in Missouri. The other is in Kansas.

The Kansas City Chiefs play in Kansas City, Missouri. Well, they did.

But on Monday, news emerged that the Chiefs plan to move to Kansas. The Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell reported that the move is coming as long as it gets Legislative Coordinating Council approval.

Why are the Kansas City Chiefs moving from Missouri to Kansas?

The major impetus for the Chiefs' move is their stadium.

Arrowhead Stadium in their current Missouri location is aging. Moving to Kansas would allow the building of a new facility "capable of hosting major year-round events," according to the Associated Press.

The Chiefs have played at Arrowhead for 53 years.

A new stadium could cost $2 billion, according to the AP.

The proposal from the state of Kansas would use STAR bonds to cover up to 70% of the cost of the new stadium.

The new stadium would be located in Kansas City, Kansas, most likely near Children's Mercy Park, where Sporting Kansas City of MLS plays.

It'd be the second NFL franchise in a decade to leave Missouri, after the St. Louis Rams left for Los Angeles after they couldn't secure the money needed to replace their stadium.

The Chiefs were originally planning an $800 million renovation of Arrowhead, according to the AP, but a local sales tax extension was voted down last year, prompting the Chiefs to explore other possibilities.
