Liverpool fans have been left feeling angry after Arne Slot's XI for their EFL Cup Round Four meeting with Crystal Palace was revealed. The struggling Premier League champions are looking to improve their record of five defeats in their last six games when they face the Eagles at Anfield.
Slot has made wholesale changes to the XI that lost to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday, with Milos Kerkez the only one to retain his place in the lineup. The Dutch tactician has rested several of his key players, naming a number of academy stars in the squad for the encounter.
The Reds reached the final of the EFL Cup in the 2024-25 season before losing to Newcastle United in February. The club's fans are unhappy with the lineup put out by their coach, and a number of them have taken to X to express their disappointment at the selection.
A fan asked if Slot was aware that the game is taking place at Anfield.
@LFC he knows we’re playing at Anfield right 😭
Another fan expressed their displeasure, pointing out that they will support a campaign against the coach if they suffer another defeat to Crystal Palace.
@LFC Beyond angry after seeing this lineup🤬 Throwing away the match before it has even started. Resting Main players for what? They've lost 5 out of last 6 games!! Slot has lost his mind. Playing Robbo as a LB!!! WTF!! I've never been Slot out but If we lose tonight then #SlotOut
A fan was left perplexed by the selection and stated that they will likely lose the game.
@LFC Lol Another L loading Tf is this?
Another fan asked if the team was being set-up to lose on purpose.
@LFC Are we trying to lose on purpose? 😅😅😅
Liverpool are without the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Hugo Ekitike, Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Florian Wirtz, and several others for the clash at Anfield. Ryan Gravenberch, Jeremie Frimpong, Alexander Isak, and Alisson all miss out through injury for Slot's side.
The Reds have lost each of their last two meetings with Crystal Palace in the Community Shield and Premier League. Their fringe stars will hope to make a statement in the game at home, and keep their hopes of early silverware alive.
Slot hands Liverpool debut to duo
Liverpool coach Arne Slot has chosen to hand the duo of Freddie Woodman and Kieran Morrison their debuts for the club against Crystal Palace. The former Feyenoord boss has named a much-changed squad as his side are set to lock horns with Oliver Glasner's side at Anfield.
Freddie Woodman and Kieran Morrison are set to make their Reds debuts this evening 👏
With goalkeeper Alisson injured and Giorgi Mamardashvili rested, Slot has turned to 28-year-old Englishman Woodman to start against Palace. He enjoyed a fine 2024-25 season in the Championship with Preston North End before joining the Reds in the summer.
Slot has named 18-year-old winger Morrison alongside the more experienced Federico Chiesa and Rio Ngumoha in attack for Liverpool. The youngster was named among the substitutes against Brentford in the Premier League last week. He has risen through the ranks at the club and primarily features for the U-21 side.
